Night Shift, with exceptions.

Nightcap sits in your menu bar and turns Night Shift off while the apps and websites you choose are in front, and back on when you leave them. The rest of the time, your schedule runs as usual.

How it works

It follows what's in front

Pick the apps, and the websites in Safari or Chrome, that need true colour. While one is in front, Night Shift stays off. Switch away and it comes back, and your schedule carries on as before.

Overrule it anytime

Turn Night Shift on while a rule holds it off, from the menu, Control Center or a script, and Nightcap goes along with you. It snoozes that rule until the schedule's next change instead of fighting you.

Made to be scripted

Everything in the menu is also a nightcap command. Bind it to a key with skhd, Raycast or Karabiner, run it from a script, or read the status as JSON.

Rules can also live in a plain config file, next to the rest of your setup.

$ nightcap disable 1h30m
Night Shift forced off by a timed disable until 01:00
$ nightcap rules add domain:figma.com
Added domain:figma.com. Night Shift forced off by a timed disable until 01:00.
$ nightcap resume
Night Shift following the schedule
$ nightcap status --json | jq -r .decision.verdict
hands_off

Set it up before sunset.
